The Great Work
I have been thinking about this for a few days now. It was inevitable that I would begin to think along the lines of The Great Work. Sooner or later anyone who works with magick long enough begins to ponder this idea. The Great Work is about the greater good. The greater good that goes beyond our individual wants and needs and focuses on the needs of humanity and our planet. The Greater Good can cover many areas from preserving the past for future generations to fighting hunger to saving the environment to fighting illiteracy to helping fund space exploration.
The basic idea is helping our planet to become a better place for all of us to live and to leave this planet in a better condition than we inherited it. We all can take a part in this global project and I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my part.
The reason magickal minded people at some point begin to ponder this idea is because after awhile you crave a desire to use your magick for a noble good. (Well I hope people end up having this desire for their magick at some point.) When you study magick you should also find yourself studying philosophy otherwise you are just doing sorcery. You should also find yourself studying spirituality as well. When you combine philosophy and spirituality with magick you begin to realize the world can be improved and with your knowledge and skills there is a part for you to participate.
So I’m studying The Great Work idea. I want to participate yet I know there is being involved in The Great Work from an esoteric perspective and being involved from an exoteric perspective. The perspective is HOW you understand your part in the big picture. I’m still trying to map it out in my thoughts but there IS a difference. I think part of the difference is WHO you connect with in doing The Great Work. What organizations you work with and help.
I do know that when one begins to look into organizations that help society on a large scale then the whole idea of the New World Order and a “brotherhood” comes into play. There is always that wonder if a large organization is the front for something else. And I wonder about that. Which is why research and study is vital. Besides anything I do to help The Great Work will probably be local.
I'm still in the beginning stages of my thought process on The Great Work yet I do look forward to what I figure out and what I decide to do help.
